Physical or Chemical???
Physical
sunscreens contain Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide which physically block and deflect
the sun’s rays protect the skin.
Chemical sunscreens absorb the sun’s rays and protect the skin. Chemical sunscreens can contain Octylcrylene, Avobenzone, Octinoxate, Octisalate, Oxybenzone, Homosalate, Helioplex, 4-MBC, Mexoryl SX and XL, Tinosob S and M, Uvinul T 150 and Uvinul A plus.
In terms of ingredients a physical sunscreen is generally more stable than the ingredients of a chemical.
What does
this mean in terms of skin, Titanium Dioxide can be problematic for some people
prone to break outs. Zinc oxide is generally good for sensitive skins, it is
the main ingredient in Nappy rash creams.
Chemical filters tend to be more irritating to the skin and eyes and can result in allergic reactions.
Physical
sunscreen containing Zinc oxide ingredients can protect you from UVB rays and
UVA rays and protect the skin immediately.
Chemical sunscreen ingredients offer more coverage against UVA and UVB rays than physical sunscreens but depend on whether the ingredient combinations remain stable. Protection takes 20mins.
Physical
sunscreen is most likely to be thicker and needs to be applied more frequently,
while Chemical sunscreens are usually running and are most likely to be the
sunscreen teamed up in primers or make up.
Physical sunscreen
does not cause free radical damage to the skin while some chemical filters can
cause skin damage, irritation and aging.
